Build a park - Maple Ridge residents are mounting a campaign to complete their new park at the corner of 31st & Peoria. The corner, formerly the site of a residential home, now sits empty waiting for the gazebo, water feature and landscaping.
The park will feature a gazebo with a brick floor. Special bricks will be sold and used to pave the open gazebo. This is an exciting opportunity not only for Maple Ridge residents, but the citizens of Tulsa and surrounding areas to buy bricks to not only support the park but to create a lasting remembrance. The 5" x 8" bricks can be engraved with up to 21 characters and three lines. Some suggestions for engraving include memorials, birthday, weddings, anniversaries and graduations. To design and purchase a brick, go to www.mapleridgeneighborhood.com. The bricks are $100 each and are a wonderful way to create a permanent memory of a special occasion or individual or group. 2-1-1 now statewide.
Oklahomans now have access to the state's 3-digit Information and Referral hotline, 2-1-1. The 2-1-1 phone number will be "live", 24 hours daily, 365 days annually, statewide, effective April 1, as the remaining 19 counties in North Central and Northwestern Oklahoma transition into the 2-1-1 service.
Feed the hungry - Father's House Church is partnering with the Community Food Bank of Oklahoma to fight hunger.
Oklahoma is now the 3rd hungriest state in the U.S. As a community we can do something to reverse this statistic. Here is what you do:
Bring any non-perishable food items to Father's House (located at 9222 S. Harvard) and drop them off in the designated drop-off point (it looks like a little red school house). You should be able to spot it as you drive up, it is near the entrance to the student center (the house on the property).
Thank you for your help in fighting hunger in Oklahoma. Together, we will make a difference.
DEQ Encourages Oklahomans to Recycle Oil
Many Oklahomans relied on generators for power during the recent ice storm. Most manufacturers recommend changing the oil in equipment that runs on small engines, such as a generator, every 30 to 40 hours of use. The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) urges residents to recycle used oil from generators as well as cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles, farm equipment, and lawnmowers.
When oil is dumped, it can be harmful to wildlife and the environment. Oil can also contaminate waterways resulting in pollution of drinking water sources. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the used oil from one oil change can contaminate one million gallons of fresh water, which is a one year supply for 50 people.
Used motor oil can be recycled into new oil, processed into fuel oils and used as raw materials. EPA estimates if all Americans who change their own oil recycle the petroleum-based product, it would be enough motor oil for more than 50 million cars a year.
When changing oil, keep a few things in mind:
* Never pour oil down a storm drain
* Do not pour it onto soil or into a waterway
* Put used oil in a sturdy container and take it to a local service station or oil retailer
A list of most service stations or retailers that accept used oil is available at www.deq.state.ok.us/lpdnew/Recyclingindex.htm . Additionally, many communities have household hazardous waste programs that accept used oil, and in some areas used oil can be taken to a city or county barn. For more information on recycling or proper oil disposal, contact DEQ at (405) 702-5100.
Beware of fraud - Home owners should be sure they are dealing with FEMA officials before providing any personal information. There is never a fee or charge for any FEMA services.
*Ask for ID. Federal employees carry official photo identification and applicants may receive a visit from more than one inspector or verifier.
*Safeguard personal information. Do not give personal information such as social security and bank account numbers to individuals claiming to be affiliated with the federal government. FEMA inspectors never require this information.
*Under no circumstances are FEMA representatives allowed to accept money.
*FEMA inspectors verify damage, but do not hire or endorse specific contractors to fix homes or recommend repairs.
If you suspect contractor fraud, contact the Oklahoma Attorney General's Consumer Protection Unit at 1-405-521-2029 or online at www.oag.state.ok.us your local Better Business Bureau. Or call the FEMA Fraud Hotline at 1-866-720-5721

My Soldier
My Soldier is a program that puts politics aside and lets U.S. soldiers know that someone back home cares. The goal of the program is to show support for troops serving in hardship areas - Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa - by establishing pen-pal relationships with them.
When a person enrolls in the My Soldier program, they agree to adopt a soldier. They receive a "starter kit" with guidelines for writing letters to their deployed United States Armed Serviceperson and a red My Soldier bracelet to publicly show their support for American troops. The program is free, but donations are encouraged from those participants that can afford it.
Since Manhattanville President Richard A. Berman and active U.S. Army Sergeant Juan Salas-who also is a Manhattanville student-launched My Soldier, at a Veterans' Day press conference in 2004 over 400,000 participants have signed up to adopt over 175,000 deployed military personnel.

Tantrums and how to stop them. Call about openings in our Parent-Child Interaction Therapy Program in Child Guidance at the Tulsa Health Department.
PCIT is an evidenced-based treatment model with highly specified, step-by-step, live-coached sessions with both the parent/caregiver and the child. Parents learn skills through PCIT teaching sessions, and using a transmitter and receiver system or Bug-in-the-Ear, the parent/caregiver is coached in specific skills as he or she interacts in specific play with the child. The therapist provides the coaching from behind a one-way mirror. The emphasis is on changing negative parent/caregiver-child patterns.
Treatment generally lasts 12-20 weeks and is mastery-based rather than time-limited. Generally, sessions are equally divided between relationship-enhancing skills and positive discipline and compliance. Interested parents may contact the Child Guidance Program by calling 594-4720. One of the Behavioral Health Specialists will return the call setting the initial appointment. For more information please call Jennifer Weber, MEd., LPC at 594-4726 or Karri Geisinger-Hamilton, M.S., LPC at 594-4735.
Oklahoma Insurance Department's EAGLE (Ending Arguments, Gently, Legally, and Economically) Program.
The EAGLE program provides a cost effective forum to settle disputes in a fair manner. Insurance Commissioner Holland said that either party could still go to court if they are unable to reach an agreement through the mediation process. The program has been around since 1999 and has a 75% success rate at solving disputes between insurance companies and consumers.
For more information or to use the program, please contact the Oklahoma Insurance Department at 405-521-2828 or toll-free at 1-800-522-0071. Dispute mediation is an informal and effective way, with the aid of a neutral and trained third party, to reach an agreement in a dispute without court litigation. Participation in the process is completely voluntary.

Oklahoma is in dire need of Quality Foster care. We can't rely on just kinship foster care for every child. Many times there are no relatives available to place these children with. We have a dire need for foster homes in Oklahoma. If you or someone you know would like to experience the rewards of becoming a foster parent, or if you would like to become a volunteer or donate items to an OKDHS Children's shelter, please call 1-800-376-9729, or click on www.okdhs.org.

There can be a maximum of five foster children in the home and six children total. Childcare assistance is available for foster parents who work 20 hours or more a week.

Volunteers Needed for Mentoring Program
Volunteers of America of Oklahoma has started a new mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents. Oklahoma ranks first in the nation for female incarceration rates. On average, each incarcerated female has 2.5 children. In the Tulsa area alone, this amounts to over 2,000 children who have at least one incarcerated parent, if not both parents.
Studies show that children who meet regularly with a mentor are 46% less likely to begin using drugs, 27% less likely to begin drinking alcohol, and 52% less likely to skip school, and 33% less likely to hit someone.
Volunteers of America needs people who can meet with a child an average of a couple hours a week. If you would like to make a difference, please contact VOA at 918-307-1500.
