During these unprecedented times, we can’t forget to do one of the most important things that Christ’s calls us to do: give. As Christians, we know that generosity has the power to unite and heal communities in good times and bad. A global threat like COVID-19 touches every person on the planet, and it gives us a chance to come together as both local and global communities to lend a helping hand to one another.
#GivingTuesdayNow is a new global day of giving and unity that will take place on May 5, 2020 – in addition to the regularly scheduled Dec 1, 2020 #GivingTuesday – as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.
Check out these ideas for supporting communities locally and around the world.
GIVE TO YOUR LOCAL CHURCH
With social distancing still encouraged, many churches are still not meeting physically. That means there’s less opportunities for congregants to give. But churches need giving now more than ever. You could mail in a check to your church to do your part. Or maybe they offer a contact-free way of dropping off your gift. Many churches also offer giving online. However you can, make sure you are still supporting your local church.
SHOW SUPPORT FOR HEALTHCARE WORKERS
There’s not occupation that needs our support right now more than healthcare workers. We can help them out by donating supplies, letting them know we are praying and thinking of them, advocating for them, and staying home. Many of them are working long shifts and odd hours, and can benefit from knowing we have their backs.
GIVE TO ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE TAKING ACTION
Many organizations are helping out the most vulnerable in ways we couldn’t by ourselves. Give something to support these organizations. Some organizations doing good work are Convoy of Hope, Salvation Army, or your organization of choice. You can also help support the mission of developing a new generation of leaders at Oral Roberts University.
HELP SMALL BUSINESSES
One of the areas impacted most by the pandemic is small businesses. Without the ability to be open or have patrons interact like normal, many have suffered great losses these last few weeks. Do your part by ordering takeout if they offer it, buying a gift card to use at a later date or writing a positive review for your favorite local shop.
COMBAT LONELINESS
Giving doesn’t have to be only financial. We can give our time and attention to those who may be alone right now. Reach out to a neighbor, relative, seniors or veterans right now. Give them a phone call or a nice email. Schedule a video conference with some of your friends. We can only make it through this together.
How are you giving back? Share on social media with the hashtag #GivingTuesdayNow and inspire others to give together even when we’re apart. And don’t forget to find more ideas and info at Now.GivingTuesday.org.
